SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) is a parent-based therapy for parents of children and teens with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and related problems. SPACE can also help anxious children who have sleep issues, are picky-eaters, and avoid/refuse to go to school. SPACE has been tested and found to be effective in randomized controlled clinical trials. Dr. Dunn received her training as a SPACE provider from the program developer, Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center.
Parents who participate in SPACE will learn skills to help their child overcome anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and related problems. The treatment focuses on changes that parents can make to their own behavior, they do not need to make their child change. The two main changes that parents learn to make in SPACE treatment are to respond more supportively to their anxious child and to reduce the accommodations they have been making to the child symptoms.
